I just saw Paulo Coelho’s post on Neda, the Iranian protester who died while marching for protest in Tehran, Iran.  Apparently, the doctor who’s trying to resuscitate her is his best friend.  I am guessing the verbiage below came from Paulo’s friend:

At 19:05 June 20th Place: Kargar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st. A young woman who was standing aside with her father [SIC, later identified as her music teacher] watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim’s chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.

Neda Soltani was was shot in the heart (allegedly) by the Basij (non-uniformed militia controlled by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard).  I am guessing that she is protesting the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  He first won the presidential elections on 2005 and was re-elected.

Anyway, I do not want to delve deeper on Mahmoud and why people are protesting against his victory.  The story is the same anywhere.  Corruption, cronyism, human rights violation — you name it.  The thing is that a life is now lost and wasted and the Iranian government is pretending that it did not happen.  I guess her family’s only solace lies in the fact that her death was not in vain.

Here are two of the videos circulating all over the net:

From YouTube:

On June 20, 2009 in the city of Tehran, Neda, along with her father, walked in protest down Karegar Avenue against the 2009 Iranian election. Among many other protesters, she was shot in the heart by the Basij, the non-uniformed militia controlled by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

Neda was a 27 year old woman killed by the Basij during the 2009 Iranian election protests. Her death was captured on video by at least two bystanders. The graphic videos were broadcasted on the internet, quickly becoming a rallying cry for the pro-reform demonstration. Neda means “voice” in Farsi, and she was fittingly dubbed the “voice of Iran”.

Rest In Peace Neda Joone Azizam

“Neda Agha Soltan didn’t believe that we always have to fight and quarrel and be violent and have death,” said Makan. “There’s only one thing (Iranians) must fight and that’s ignorance.
And you don’t fight ignorance with a sword or a gun. You turn on a light.” Neda Agha Soltan, music student martyred in Iran, June 2009
